Eclosing

I think it is proper to say a cocoon hatching... What about pupae? I don't think hatch sounds right for this situation. I hope callow ant is the proper word when new ants are born and moving around....

I think the word you're searching for when they emerge is eclose.

That's right...a pupa ecloses into a newborn (callow) ant (imago)

I was wondering, in my Camponotus nest the queen has 2 cocoons. The first you can tell the pupa is darkening. Does this mean eclosing is near or maybe is it dead? The other cocoon is 10 days younger...

I think the elder is darker 'cause it's more devloped and it'll soon hatch
